The Importance Of Branding Your Business - Graphics/Video ...

The Importance Of Branding Your Business by erad(m): 11:30am On Jan 28Prior to launching an advertising campaign or developing a marketing strategy, it is crucial that you determine your brand?s identity. Simply put, a brand?s identity is its singular ?personality? that serves to identify a company or business and distinguish it from its competitors. Although ?branding? has become a buzzword popularized by entrepreneurs, many people still have trouble grasping what the term means.

So what is branding, exactly? Branding is successfully creating a brand identity that will not only make your business more appealing in comparison to your competitors, but it will also convince consumers that in a sea of prospects, your business is the only one capable of satisfying their needs. Many different components can go into developing a brand, including eye-catching designs and a unique name; however, a brand encompasses more than just a logo. It?s what clients take away from the experience of working with you. It?s what your company stands for and is known for within your market. Coming up with a brand means coming up with what your company promises to deliver, whether that?s perfectly seasoned gourmet pizzas or impeccably tailored shirts. Branding includes the overall style of your company and the meaning it has to clients. Ideally, it would motivate people to buy your products or use your services.

If you don?t define your brand, you create the possibility that someone else will do it for you, including your competitors. Defining you brand allows you to control?or at least influence?how others perceive you. An effective brand marketing strategy minimizes your company?s chances of fading into the background and solidifies your reputation as a veritable force to be reckoned with. Strong branding demonstrates that a company aspires to something greater than just business as usual. By raising your status from a basic commodity to a brand, consumers will be willing to pay a premium for your services or products.

Ultimately, branding is perhaps most essential because it increases the chances that people will remember you, even as the battle for consumers? attention (and money) rages on. A fully-developed brand identity will push your business to the forefront of consumers? minds, making them more likely to recognize you, enlist your services, and remain loyal long after the conclusion of your professional relationship. It takes a lot of time to build (and maintain) these valuable customer relationships. Let me give you a few examples of successful branding:

-Coca Cola: The majority of people instantly recognize this brand. Their logo, the Christmas songs, TV commercials, ads and cans are a part of the Coca Cola branding strategy. This brand has been around for decades, allowing its message to go from generation to generation, and all of Coca Cola?s efforts have paid off. Wouldn?t you agree it is quite hard to imagine a world without Coca Cola?

-McDonald?s: Remember when you were a kid and going to McDonald?s was a treat? Of course you do! This is why you will probably take your (future) children to come and have a quick bite here every once in a while. McDonald?s introduced Happy Meals for children, including a small toy in every meal box. A smart move, given the fact that competitors soon offered similar deals. Furthermore, they incorporated the word ?Mac/Mc? into their product names, like ?McNuggets? or the famous ?Big Mac.? These decisions have had major influence on the way customers perceive the brand.

-Apple: Apple has found a way to become one of the most popular brands in the world by branding themselves successfully. Mac computers aren?t for just anyone, nor are the iPad or the iPhone. The late Steve Jobs was known for his way of presenting new products to the public and used his black turtleneck sweater as part of his strategy. Even the use of putting an ?i? in their product names is all part of Apple?s branding strategy. The designs of the products, the campaigns and product launches are all in sync with Apple?s style and its branding.

You can say that these companies have become experts in business branding, based on their successes. Branding could be perceived as part of marketing or as a separate component, but it is definitely closely related to marketing. Before you start diving into concepts to market your business, make sure you have determined a brand identity and are aware of all the aspects that come with brand management.

thanks to op, i think the only thing am missing out here is the slogan, my business is yet to have a singular slogan that will encapsulate all part/sections of what i really do. well i have to start thinking seriously about it now.

Re: The Importance Of Branding Your Business by Brand_new(m): 6:57pm On Jan 28Creating a great brand also goes beyond colours and logo. It includes meeting up with customers expectation thereby getting good reviews and referrals from such customers. Facebook and twitters logos would be useless without giving users a great social networking experience. Same goes for other brands who are into other kinds of business.

So branding also includes meeting up with customers expectation or giving users a wholesome experience. It is when a business achieves this that their customers would be proud to identify themselves with such businesses.

Same also goes for creating a wholesome online presence.

Yes it's possible... alot of factors need to be taken into consideration though, because an image already exists and the new image is either going to enhance or correct a negative shadow the previous image might have cast on the business.Re: The Importance Of Branding Your Business by Brand_new(m): 7:26pm On Jan 28

9/11 remains dominant political theme for US

By Tom Curry, National Affairs Writer, NBC News

The attack of Sept. 11, 2001, has been so pervasive a theme in American politics in the years since that at times we scarcely notice its influence even though it explains so much of what came after that day.

Gary Cameron / Reuters

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) questions Senator John Kerry (Not Pictured) during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing on Kerry's nomination to be secretary of state, on Capitol Hill in Washington, January 24, 2013.

Sometimes almost forgotten, 9/11 is an experience some Americans may recall only when they travel and must undergo screening from a select few of the army of 45,000 screeners that was created by the actions of 19 suicidal hijackers.

So it was remarkable that three times in the space of two Senate hearings on Wednesday and Thursday, the 9/11 attack percolated through the discussion.

Testifying Thursday morning at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to be secretary of state, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., voiced his regret that one effect of that fateful day has been to make people abroad see American policy simply in terms of killing individual al Qaida leaders and pre-empting terrorist threats.

America?s foreign policy must not be ?defined by drones and deployments alone,? Kerry warned. ?We cannot allow the extraordinary good we do to save and change lives to be eclipsed entirely by the (counterterrorism) role we have had to play since September 11th, a role that was thrust upon us.?

A day before, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in her testimony about the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, used the 2001 attack to make the case for continued robust American involvement in North Africa.

She warned of the risks of a 9/11-style attack from the group Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

?People say to me all the time, well, AQIM hasn't attacked the United States. Well, before 9/11, 2001, we hadn't been attacked on our homeland since, I guess, the War of 1812 and Pearl Harbor. So you can't say, well, because they haven't done something they're not going to do it,? she said.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tells the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Mali's "progress on democracy" was disrupted by the Kaddafi-supported militant and al-Qaeda loyalists, warning that we must not let the region become a haven for terrorists.

But a bit later Clinton came under assault from Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who used 9/11 as his rhetorical theme.

?Ultimately with your leaving (the State Department), you accept the culpability for the worst tragedy since 9/11, and I really mean that,? Paul told Clinton. Democrats on the committee recoiled in anger at what they saw as a cheap exploitation of 9/11.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., told Clinton, ?I think if some people on this committee want to call the tragedy in Benghazi the worst since 9/11, it misunderstands the nature of 4,000 Americans-plus lost over 10 years of war in Iraq, fought under false pretenses. It was fought under false pretenses, but it was also fought, I think, because we had a misunderstanding of what we could do and what we could manage in that region for what was under our control.?

Murphy, first elected to the House in 2006 as part of the voter backlash against the Iraq war, didn?t mention that Clinton herself, serving in the Senate in 2002, voted for the congressional resolution authorizing President George W. Bush to invade Iraq.

Her vote was one liability during her bid for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination ? a liability which Barack Obama, a state senator when Congress voted on the Iraq invasion, didn?t have.

The 9/11 attack created the political environment which made possible, and perhaps even inevitable, the congressional vote authorizing Bush to use military force against Iraq.

In his Oct. 7, 2002, speech making the case for using force, Bush repeatedly invoked 9/11. To those American who wondered ?why do we need to confront it (the threat of Saddam Hussein) now?? Bush said, ?There?s a reason. We have experienced the horror of Sept. 11. We have seen that those who hate America are willing to crash airplanes into buildings full of innocent people.? And America?s enemies would be eager ?to use a biological or chemical, or a nuclear weapon.?

Four days later, the Senate voted for the Iraq war authorization, with Kerry, Clinton and then-Sen. Joe Biden among the 77 voting for it.

Just as Murphy had argued at Wednesday?s Senate hearing that Iraq was ?fought under false pretenses,? so, too, Democrats back in 2004 argued that Kerry, Clinton, Biden, then-Sen. Chuck Hagel and the other members of Congress who?d voted for the Iraq war resolution had been deceived.

But some antiwar Democrats argued that ? deception or not ? their party could never beat Bush in 2004 with a candidate who was compromised by having voted for the Iraq war resolution.

It?s impossible to know the answer to that question ? would Howard Dean or Sen. Bob Graham (who voted ?no? on the Iraq war resolution) have defeated Bush in 2004?

We do know that Bush held his party?s 2004 convention in New York City, a target of the 9/11 attack and defeated Kerry in the election.

His second term was an unhappy one for many reasons, but it was Bush ? not Kerry ? who got to the fill the next two vacancies on the Supreme Court.

And 9/11?s effect is also still directly felt in the current wrestling over fiscal policy. As Obama and congressional leaders try to figure out how to pay for ever-growing entitlement programs and reduce budget deficits, Republicans in Congress, but many Democrats, too, are reluctant to significantly reduce a $630 billion Defense Department budget that grew massively in the years after Sept. 11, 2001.

Guns at Home: Where a Shooting Range Comes ... - AOL Real Estate

We've been talking about guns in America over the last week, and we know that the debate over gun control can get very heated. But let's leave aside for a moment the question of whether gun permits in a neighborhood help or hurt property values and instead take a look at the real estate itself. Here are properties that both pro- and anti-gun forces might at least agree are impressive (or intimidating). Thanks to our friends at Estately for tipping us off to this smokin' real estate!

Newtown Square, Penn.

This $16.95 million home has a basement shooting range. Thanks to the unique requirements and building permits necessary to build an indoor shooting range, you won't happen upon these homes very often. But if you're hell-bent on blowing off some steam during television commercials, maybe it's worth it.

Rutledge, Ga.

If all the red tape is stopping you from building a shooting range in your own home, then building one outside your home is probably the next best thing. See this $925,000 home in Rutledge, for example. All you need is some wide open space for a professional-looking rifle range with bullet-stops and target-holders.

Mitchells, Va.

If shotguns are more your thing, then this $149,000 property with its own backyard skeet shooting range may be the home for you. (For those not in the know, skeet shooting is when marksmen aim at clay disks automatically flung into the air at high speed from fixed stations.) It doesn't take as much effort to build as a full-fledged rifle range; in fact, "traps" -- the devices that launch the disks -- can be bought as-is (and online!).

Chadwick, Ill.

If archery is more up your alley, then how about this $275,000 home with an indoor archery range? It also comes with $40,000 in retail inventory and displays.

Oil falls on US home sales, manufacturing report

(AP) ? The price of oil fell Wednesday after monthly home sales and manufacturing data raised concerns about the U.S. economy's growth prospects.

Benchmark oil for March delivery was down 13 cents to $96.55 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The February contract, which expired Tuesday, rose 68 cents to close at $96.24, a four-month high.

A drop in U.S. sales of previously occupied homes for December from November hurt sentiment, as did a report by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond showing a drop in manufacturing in the central Atlantic region.

Michael Hewson of CMC Markets said in a market commentary that the reports raised "concerns about the US manufacturing sector once again." A downturn in factory production would likely reduce demand for energy and cause prices to fall.

Ample supplies of oil and gasoline are also weighing on prices. There also remains some uncertainty about the outcome of negotiations in Washington on the U.S. debt limit. Congress is set to vote later in the day on a measure to raise the country's borrowing limit. Otherwise it could face an economically calamitous, first-ever default.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, was down 26 cents to $112.16 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Natural gas rose 2.9 cents to $3.587 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Wholesale gasoline fell 0.3 cent to $2.844 per gallon.

? Heating oil fell 0.3 cent to $3.053 a gallon.

(AP) ? The death toll from the terrorist siege at a natural gas plant in the Sahara climbed past 80 on Sunday as Algerian forces searching the refinery for explosives found dozens more bodies, many so badly disfigured it was unclear whether they were hostages or militants, a security official said.

Algerian special forces stormed the plant on Saturday to end the four-day siege, moving in to thwart what government officials said was a plot by the Islamic extremists to blow up the complex and kill all their captives with mines sown throughout the site.

In a statement, the Masked Brigade, the group that claimed to have masterminded the takeover, warned of more such attacks against any country backing France's military intervention in neighboring Mali, where the French are trying to stop an advance by Islamic extremists.

"We stress to our Muslim brothers the necessity to stay away from all the Western companies and complexes for their own safety, and especially the French ones," the statement said.

Algeria said after Saturday's assault by government forces that at least 32 extremists and 23 hostages were killed. On Sunday, Algerian bomb squads sent in to blow up or defuse the explosives found 25 more bodies, said the security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

"These bodies are difficult to identify. They could be the bodies of foreign hostages or Algerians or terrorists," the official said.

In addition, a wounded Romanian who had been evacuated died, raising the overall death toll to at least 81.

"Now, of course, people will ask questions about the Algerian response to these events, but I would just say that the responsibility for these deaths lies squarely with the terrorists who launched a vicious and cowardly attack," British Prime Minister David Cameron said. Three Britons were killed and another three were feared dead.

The dead hostages were also known to include at least one American as well as Filipino and French workers. Nearly two dozen foreigners by some estimates were unaccounted for.

It was unclear whether anyone was rescued in the final assault on the complex, which is run by the Algerian state oil company along with BP and Norway's Statoil.

Two private Algerian TV stations and an online news site said security forces scouring the plant found five militants hiding out and learned that three others had fled. That information could not be immediately confirmed by security officials.

Authorities said the bloody takeover was carried out Wednesday by 32 men from six countries, under the command from afar of the one-eyed Algerian bandit Moktar Belmoktar, founder of the Masked Brigade, based in Mali. The attacking force called itself "Those Who Sign in Blood."

The Masked Brigade said Sunday the attack was payback against Algeria for allowing over-flights of French aircraft headed to Mali and for closing its long border with Mali. In an earlier communication, the Brigade claimed to have carried out the attack in the name of al-Qaida.

Armed with heavy machine guns, rocket launchers, missiles and grenades, the militants singled out foreign workers at the plant, killing some of them on the spot and attaching explosive belts to others.

Algeria's tough and uncompromising response to the crisis was typical of its take-no-prisoners approach in confronting terrorists, favoring military action over negotiation. Algerian military forces, backed by attack helicopters, launched two assaults on the plant, the first one on Thursday.

The militants had "decided to succeed in the operation as planned, to blow up the gas complex and kill all the hostages," Algerian Communications Minister Mohamed Said told state radio.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said the terrorists had tried to blow up the plant on Saturday but managed only to start a small fire. "That's when they started to execute hostages, and the special forces intervened," Eide said. Norway's Statoil said five Norwegians were still missing.

An audio recording of Algerian security forces speaking with the head of the kidnappers, Abdel Rahman al-Nigiri, on the second day of the drama indicated the hostage-takers were trying to organize a prisoner swap.

"You see our demands are so easy, so easy if you want to negotiate with us," al-Nigiri said in the recording broadcast by Algerian television. "We want the prisoners you have, the comrades who were arrested and imprisoned 15 years ago. We want 100 of them."

In another phone call, al-Nigiri said that half the militants had been killed by the Algerian army on Thursday and that he was ready to blow up the remaining hostages if security forces attacked again. An organization that monitors videos from radicals posted one showing al-Nigiri with what appeared to be an explosive belt around his waist.

The Algerians' use of forced raised an international outcry from some countries worried about their citizens.

But French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Sunday on French television: "The terrorists ... they're the ones to blame."

David Plouffe, a senior adviser to President Barack Obama, said that al-Qaida and al-Qaida-affiliated groups remain a threat in North Africa and other parts of the world, and that the U.S. is determined to help other countries destroy those networks.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Plouffe said the tragedy in Algeria shows once again "that all across the globe countries are threatened by terrorists who will use civilians to try and advance their twisted and sick agenda."

Top DIY Plumbing Mistakes That Will Cost You - Nixco Plumbing Inc.

It seems like we talk a lot on our blog about DIY plumbing being a bad thing. We should clear this up now: we?re not against DIY for small projects ? in fact, for certain things like minor faucet leaks or small drain clogs, we recommend it! Once you start getting into more complicated repairs and installations, however, it?s best to leave it to the pros. We can?t tell you how many times we?ve talked to people at their wits end who, after five trips to the hardware store, had to give up!

We see a number of common mistakes that people make frequently when taking on DIY plumbing jobs. If you?re planning on a little home improvement project this weekend, don?t let one of these happen to you!

1) The ?Just Enough? ? this is probably the most common DIY plumbing mistake we see. Whether someone?s been struggling with a task for a long time and finally got it to kind of work, or they almost finish and get lazy, it seems like the end of a lot of plumbing projects turns out pretty sloppy. But when it comes to unclogging a drain, repairing a toilet or installing a faucet, a sloppy project can quickly turn unforgiving, leaving you with a bigger problem that you started with! Using the wrong sized equipment or piping, or trying to jury-rig something into place because you think it will save you time can often lead to disaster ? if you don?t think you?ll be able to see a project through to the end, you?re better off calling a plumber!

2) Using mismatched materials ? do you know the difference between copper and galvanized steel piping? Between PEX and PVC? Knowing the material your pipes are made of, along with having a decent working knowledge of your piping system, is important if you?re planning on taking on some DIY pipe repair. And while there are ways of connecting pipes of different materials, it?s difficult to do and can quickly lead to dangerous corrosion if not done correctly.

3) Installing fixtures without proper tools ? there?s no surer way of guaranteeing something won?t work right than by trying to install it without the proper tools. We?re not saying it CAN?T happen ? after all, you can install a toilet that looks like it works well, but if you don?t bolt it down with the proper wrenches and use a level to make sure it sits properly, your bathroom is going to be under water in no time and you?ll be calling the plumber for toilet repair!

4) Odd designs in remodeling ? we?ve seen some pretty crazy configurations over the years ? bathrooms stuck in attics and basements seemingly at random, with no attention paid to the home?s plumbing structure. A lot of times, people move piping to areas where it won?t be seen in the main living areas, as opposed to routing the plumbing based on their home?s actual layout. This leads to leaks, spotty water pressure and a host of other problems ? don?t do it!

5) Racing through a project you?re not experienced with ? this one happens to everyone: it?s the day before Thanksgiving, you?ve got 20 people coming over tomorrow and the toilet on the main floor is totally messed up! Thinking you don?t have enough time to call a plumber, you hastily take the toilet apart, try to fix it and end up with a bunch of toilet components scattered on the floor and no time. Don?t let this happen to you! Most plumbing companies offer emergency toilet repair ? you?re much better off calling one of them, or waiting and taking on the project when you have more time.

If you know how to fix a problem with your plumbing system, go ahead with it ? you may save money, and you?ll get the satisfaction of a job well done. If you think you?ll end up with bigger problems than you started with, however, call your local plumber!

Rick Perry?s Texas Women?s Health Program Leaves Many Women Without?

What happens when Governor Rick Perry blocks Planned Parenthood health centers from participating in the Texas Women?s Health Program?? The 50,000 low-income women who had previously gone to one of the 47 Planned Parenthood health centers for access to affordable birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, and STI testing are forced to find a new provider.? Unfortunately, finding a new provider is easier said than done.

Just last week Texas claimed its capacity to provide health care will increase ? so far not so much. ?In fact, many of the named providers on the new Texas Women?s Health Program?s website don't even offer women?s health services.??

CBS Evening News took a closer look at the mess in Texas.? Check it out in the clip below:

Man accused in Picasso vandalism to remain jailed

HOUSTON (AP) ? A man accused of vandalizing a 1929 Pablo Picasso painting in Texas, in an act caught on cellphone video, has been ordered jailed on $500,000 bonds.

Uriel Landeros fled to Mexico after he was accused of spray-painting "Woman in a Red Armchair" at Houston's the Menil (muh-NEEL') Collection on June 13. He surrendered last week at the U.S.-Mexico border.

A state judge in Houston agreed with prosecutors Wednesday that Landeros is a flight risk.

Landeros faces felony graffiti and criminal mischief charges. The 22-year-old said little during the brief court hearing.

The vandalism was caught on video and posted on YouTube. The vandal left behind an image of a bullfighter, a bull and the word "conquista," which means "conquest" in Spanish.

Fort Bragg expects to stop using goats for trauma training as military moves to ban it

On average, soldiers on Fort Bragg slaughter 300 goats a month for medical trauma training meant to help save lives in battle.

Animal activists say the animals are shot, stabbed, bludgeoned and blown up to simulate the types of injuries soldiers face.

For three decades, the activists have tried to end the practice. Their efforts appear to have finally paid off.

The 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, signed into law this month, requires the Department of Defense to provide Congress with a strategy and detailed timeline by March for the replacement of animals for medical training.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which applauds the move, said Fort Bragg training accounts for about a third of the animal deaths caused by the military each year.

Government documents show that officials at Fort Bragg's Army Special Operations Command solicited up to 3,600 goats for use in training last year.

The documents show that the command planned to use about 300 goats a month.

Officials with the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School and Army Special Operations Command confirmed that they use animals for training but said they could not comment further.

The officials said they have not been given specific guidance on the requirements outlined by the authorization act.

PETA and other groups have protested the use of live animals in military training, advocating for simulation and other modern, nonanimal methods, said Justin Goodman, director of the group's Laboratory Investigations Department.

In the 1980s, advocates were able to stop the use of dogs and cats in the training, Goodman said, but the language in the authorization act represents the first time Congress has required the military to formalize its efforts to end all animal use.

Goodman said 10,000 animals are killed each year during trauma training conducted by the military and private military contractors.

Up to a third of those animal deaths are attributed to training on or around Fort Bragg, and several thousand more are attributed to civilian contractors who do work for various military groups.

Dr. John Pippin, a Dallas cardiologist who advocates on behalf of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, said it is important to realize that this isn't a choice between saving a soldier and saving a goat.

"The use of goats and pigs for this type of training, if it was ever the best method, is not the best now," he said. "Anyone who tells you it's choosing between a goat and a soldier is devoid of a valid argument. That's a cop-out. It's not the only way or the best way."

The committee helped to craft a bill last year that would force the Department of Defense to end the practice of using live animals in trauma training within five years.

That bill did not pass the U.S. House but served as the basis for the language inserted into the authorization act, officials said.

Pippin said the use of live animals in medical training was commonplace when he went through medical school in the late 1970s.

But even then, he said, many questioned the practice.

"We just knew, intuitively, that this was not relevant," he said.

Now, only about five medical schools out of nearly 180 in the United States and Canada use live animals as part of their curriculum, Pippin said.

'Cut suits'

Pippin and Goodman advocate for the use of various simulators, including "cut suits" that they say are better suited for the trauma training.

Some simulators look like humans, they said, and feature lifelike skin, anatomically correct organs, breakable bones and realistic blood flow.

Others can be worn by humans while still providing many of the realistic features.

"The anatomy and physiology of a goat and a pig are dramatically different from humans," Goodman said. "The simulators are better in all regards."

Goodman and Pippin said many military schools moved to simulators long ago, including the Rascon School of Combat Medicine at Fort Campbell, Ky., the Air Force Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills and the Navy Trauma Training Center.

PETA officials said Camp Lejeune, at one point, also stopped using live animals in training.

Lejeune officials did not respond to inquiries, but government documents show that officials on the Marine base do use live animals for trauma training, stating on bid paperwork that the live tissue training "has proven to save lives and lessen the severity of injury in combat."

Goodman said PETA would ask the Marine Corps to cease the use of animals in training.

Part of the problem, Goodman said, is that the training curriculum within the military is decentralized, with no overarching structure.

The use of live animals occurs on at least 20 bases across the country, he said.

But, he said, it's largely nonexistent in other parts of the world.

Twenty-two of the 28 countries in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization have banned the use of live animals in training, Goodman said.

And news reports indicate that German officials have barred U.S. soldiers stationed in that country from training involving live animals in the past.

Once the military's ban on using live animals is in place, Goodman said, it will bring the U.S. up to the standards set by those countries, while improving the training itself.

"It's a win-win," he said.

(AP) ? Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are ready to crack each other up at the Golden Globe Awards.

The two multi-hyphenate talents offered a taste of their quick-witted banter on a conference call with reporters Wednesday, during which Fey promised, "We're going to sing the whole show."

"The whole show is going to be sung front to back and Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine have written it," Fey deadpanned.

"We just called up Sondy," Poehler said. "He just said, 'Jackpot.'"

Fey, 42, and Poehler, 41, take over for three-time Globes host Ricky Gervais, who sometimes created a prickly atmosphere with his pointed barbs at individual stars and films.

"It was originally going to be the car from 'Transformers,'" Fey cracked about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's first choice for a show host this year.

The Emmy winner said she doesn't expect to "change the face of comedy" at the show.

"Because it's such a fun, kind of sloppy night, it's not really about the host giving any big comedy performance," Fey said. "We feel like our job is to keep things moving and also to try to help get the movie stars more liquored up so, hopefully, someone's boob will fall out of a dress. That's our main role."

Alcohol really does play a role in the show, with drinks at every table, Poehler said. "So it doesn't take much, you know?"

"And Somehow, no matter what time you get there, you always just missed the food," Fey said. "So you get there and there's just booze on the table and a box of candy and that's it. And the women haven't eaten for days, so they have a half a glass of wine and they're gone."

The two hosts are also competing against each other as nominees for actress in a TV comedy for starring in the shows they write and produce. Fey is up for "30 Rock," while Poehler got the nod for "Parks and Recreation."

Poehler said they have been too busy to consider acceptance speeches.

"I know that I don't need one," Fey said.

"If either one of us does win, we'll already have been talking at that point for a while anyways so people will be sick of our faces, so I'm sure we'll keep it short and sweet," Poehler said. "Or screw it. Since we're hosting, we could just go as long as we wanted and cut into other people's time."

Considering their dresses for the black-tie affair, Fey said she planned to pay sartorial tribute to the night's honorees.

"I'm going to wear one costume from each of the nominated films," she said, "beginning with 'Django' and ending with a different character from 'Django.'"

Given the Globes' boozy atmosphere, will the hostesses imbibe?

"I'm going to pub-crawl it all the way to the venue," Poehler said. "Then I'm going to try and take like a two-hour blackout nap before we start, and as soon as the show's over, I'm going to go on a 10-day juice cleanse."

Added Fey: "I'm going to start a really aggressive awards-season workout routine in the middle of the show."

The 70th annual Golden Globe Awards will be presented Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and broadcast live on NBC.

Texas Chainsaw 3D Sequel(s) Planned at Lionsgate

3-Texas-Chainsaw-3D

Exclusives

Exclusive: While many critics were quick to dub Texas Chainsaw 3D (review) as the film that would kill the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, they maybe should have taken a deep bite into their tongue.

Bloody Disgusting has heard through the grapevine on various occasions that the producers behind Texas Chainsaw 3D had acquired the rights to make up to 7 more films (including this one), and that this Leatherface adventure is the beginning of an entire new franchise at Lionsgate.

And as always, the success of each film dictates what comes next.

We?re the first to receive word that the people behind TCM 3D will in fact move forward on a sequel to the continuation of Tobe Hooper?s 1974 classic. As reported earlier today, TCM 3D topped the domestic B.O. Friday with $10.2 million, and is looking at a three-day haul more in the low-to-mid $20 million range.

Horror is #1 at the boxoffice, and Leatherface is king once again. It feels pretty darn good.

UPDATE 1-Singapore economy grew by 1.2 pct in 2012 - PM

(Adds details, economists' comment)

SINGAPORE, Dec 31 (Reuters) - Singapore's economy grew by

1.2 percent in 2012, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on

Monday, indicating the city-state slipped into a recession in

the last three months of the year.

Credit Suisse economist Michael Wan, in a note to clients,

estimated that 1.2 percent growth for the year implies the

economy "contracted sequentially by 2 percent quarter-on-quarter

annualised in the fourth quarter."

"Following the minus 5.9 percent quarter-on-quarter

seasonally adjusted and annualised rate in the previous quarter,

we think that the economy has likely entered a technical

recession," Wan added. His estimates assumed no revisions to

data for the first three quarters.

Singapore, whose trade is around three times GDP, has been

badly hit by the weakness in Western economies that has crimped

demand for many of its exports. The city-state's electronic

manufacturers have also failed to tap surging demand for smart

phones, unlike rivals in South Korea and Taiwan.

For the first 11 months of 2012, electronics production fell

11.1 percent compared with the same period last year,

underscoring the weakness in the export markets, according to

industrial production data released last week.

Lee, in his New Year message, said "Growth was slower this

year, at 1.2 percent. The weak U.S., European and Japanese

economies dampened our growth, but some industries have also had

difficulty hiring the workers they need to grow."

Looking ahead, the Singapore prime minister said the economy

will likely expand by 1-3 percent in 2013, reiterating an

earlier government forecast.

"In our new phase, we must expect slower growth than we have

become accustomed to," Lee added, referring to government

efforts to raise productivity rather than rely on low-cost

foreign workers to boost economic activity.

Singapore's economy grew by 4.9 percent in 2011 and the

government's latest forecast for 2012, just made in November,

had been for expansion of around 1.5 percent. The 1.2 percent

growth cited by Lee was, however, slightly higher than the 1.1

percent estimate of most economists in a Reuters poll.

Credit Suisse's Wan said the government measures to make it

harder for firms to hire cheap labour from abroad will crimp

Singapore's economic performance in the near term.

"We expect less productive companies to start to get weeded

out in 2013 as restructuring bites... Businesses that have not

made the necessary adjustments to survive in the island-state's

high-cost environment will choose to relocate, or throw in the

towel completely," he said.

The Straits Times newspaper reported earlier on Monday that

some retailers in the city-state have complained of poor

December sales, with revenue rising by just 5 percent despite

deep discounts and a boom in visitor arrivals.

Rising rents and the strong Singapore dollar have made the

city-state more expensive, and people are doing more of their

shopping when they are in other countries or buying off the

internet, the retailers said.

The government will release advance estimates for the fourth

quarter on Jan 2.
