Happy Home: Family Tree Farm Fun

A few days ago we decided to visit a local tree farm. It was nice to spend some quality family time together. Even though we didn't get a "real" tree this year, it was fun to look {and smell them}, and there were plenty of other fun activities to do. The only downsize was the temperature. I believe it was in the 40's with a wind chill below freezing! Burr!

Of course I had to get a picture of my baby bear with the bears! Sic'em!

It was just a little bit windy!

Sweet baby profile.?

Measuring up!

LOVE her face here!

Such a little adventurer.?

Talking with the rabbits.?

Chickens!

Mommy wanted more pictures...Emma Claire did not. End of story.?

Moo. Baby cow.?

I LOVE this picture. Such a daddy's girl.

Such a magical picture.?

Time to leave. We plan on going back when it is a little warmer!?

?I have to say she had an ADORABLE smocked Christmas tree dress underneath all of her layers! It was too cold for pictures though! She will wear it again I'm sure.?

Outlook

The stable outlook on OCBC reflects our belief that the bank will maintain its high systemic

importance in Singapore and that its SACP will stay within the 'a' category over the next one to

two years. The outlook also reflects the outlook on the sovereign credit rating on Singapore.

We could downgrade OCBC if: (1) we lower the sovereign credit rating on Singapore; (2) we no

longer believe OCBC has high systemic importance in Singapore; or (3) the bank's SACP declines

by two notches. We could lower OCBC's SACP if the bank's risk-adjusted capital ratio is likely

to decline below 7% due to aggressive expansion, particularly in higher risk emerging markets;

or if the bank's asset quality declines substantially.

A positive rating action is unlikely in the next one to two years. We could raise the rating

if the bank significantly strengthens its capitalization and business position, such that we

raise the SACP by two notches.

Rationale

Standard & Poor's Ratings Services bases its ratings on Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. Ltd.

(OCBC) on the bank's "strong" business position, "adequate" capital and earnings, "adequate"

risk position, "above-average" funding, and "strong" liquidity, as our criteria define those

terms. The bank's stand-alone credit profile (SACP) is 'a'. The issuer credit rating on OCBC is

two notches higher than the SACP, reflecting the bank's high systemic importance in Singapore

and our view of a high likelihood of support from the government of Singapore (unsolicited

ratings AAA/Stable/A-1+; axAAA/axA-1+).

Our 'bbb+' anchor for OCBC draws on our Banking Industry Country Risk Assessment methodology

and our view of the economic and industry risks in the countries where the bank operates. The

economic risk score of '4' is based on the weighted average of OCBC's private-sector loans to

nonbanks in each country in which it operates. As of Sept. 30, 2012, Singapore accounts for

about 53% of such loans, Malaysia about 16%, with other Asia locations and the rest of the world

accounting for the rest. Our economic risk assessment of Singapore reflects the sovereign's high

income, and diverse and resilient economy. However, we believe some potential imbalances are

building up in the property sector. OCBC's industry risk score of '2' benefits from Singapore's

well-developed institutional framework, prudent banking practices, and stable funding support of

core customer deposits.

OCBC maintains a superior competitive position in the markets in which it operates, which

supports our assessment of its business position. The bank has a strong franchise as the

second-largest domestic bank in Singapore, with a market share of about 15% of system loans and

17% of deposits. OCBC's presence in private banking and insurance through Bank of Singapore Ltd.

and Great Eastern Holdings (both not rated), respectively, complements its traditional

strength as a commercial bank in its core domestic market. We expect OCBC to maintain its stable

revenue streams from its core businesses despite the increasingly challenging macroeconomic

conditions in Asia. We also believe that OCBC will continue to diversify geographically to

offset domestic margin pressures.

We expect OCBC's risk-adjusted capital ratio to stay above 7% over the next two years. This

is based on the assumption that loan growth will be in the mid- to high-single digit range and

that the bank's profit generation and retention will keep pace with the growth. In our view, the

bank's net interest margin will remain under pressure; however increased contributions from its

private banking and fee-related business lines will offset the risk. Our expectation is also

based on our view that OCBC will maintain a reasonable dividend payout and continue to maintain

capital buffers.

Our assessment of OCBC's risk position reflects our view of the bank's straightforward

commercial banking business model. In our view, OCBC will continue to pursue measured expansion

in emerging markets, such as China and Indonesia, which are inherently more risky. However, we

expect OCBC's asset quality to remain sound due to a combination of prudent credit risk

management and stability in the bank's key markets of Singapore and Malaysia.

OCBC's large, stable retail deposit base and established franchise in Singapore underpin its

funding profile. The bank benefited from deposit inflows during periods of financial turmoil,

when smaller foreign banks were scaling back and losing deposit share. In addition, we assess

OCBC's liquidity as strong because of the bank's rich pool of liquid assets. OCBC's retail

customer funded model reduces the need for short-term wholesale funding and supports our view.

More women have driver's licenses than men in U.S.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Women have passed men on the nation's roads. More women than men now have driver's licenses, a reversal of a longtime gender gap behind the wheel that transportation researchers say is likely to have safety and economic implications.

If current trends continue, the gap will only widen. The share of teens and young adults of both sexes with driver's licenses is declining, but the decline is greater for young men, according to a study by the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute. The study looked at gender trends in driver's licenses between 1995 and 2010.

"The changing gender demographics will have major implications on the extent and nature of vehicle demand, energy consumption, and road safety," predicted Michael Sivak, co-author of the study. Women are more likely than men to purchase smaller, safer and more fuel-efficient cars; to drive less, and to have a lower fatality rate per distance driven, he said.

Over the 15 years the study covered, the share of men ages 25 to 29 years old with driver's licenses dropped 10.6 percent. The share of women of the same age with driver's licenses declined by about half that amount, 4.7 percent.

Male drivers outnumbered women drivers from the moment the first Ford Model T rolled off the assembly line in 1908, the year the automobile became popular, and through most of the last century. In the 1950s, when only about half of adult women had driver's licenses, jokes about women drivers were a staple of comedians.

But the gap gradually closed. By 1995, men with driver's licenses slightly outnumbered women, 89.2 million to 87.4 million. By 2010, 105.7 million women had licenses, compared with 104.3 million men.

Likewise, in 1995 men with driver's licenses outnumbered women in every age group except those over 70. By 2010, women outnumbered men among drivers ages 45 and older and between ages 25 and 29 years old. The share of older women who are also on hanging onto their driver's licenses has also increased.

"I want to be in my own car for as long as possible. I want to be independent for as long as I can," said Diane Spitaliere, 58, a retired government worker in Alexandria, Va.

Male drivers under age 44 are still slightly more numerous than women of the same age, but that's only because young men outnumber young women in the general population, the study said. There now are 105 boys born each year for every 100 girls in the U.S. Women outnumber men later in life because they live longer ? an average of 80 years for women, compared with about 75 years for men.

Rising Internet usage may be part of the reason for the decline in the share young drivers, especially young men, Sivak said. A previous study by the transportation institute published earlier this year found that countries that have higher Internet usage also have a lower licensure rate of teens and young adults.

"There is some suggestive evidence that Internet contact is reducing the need for personal contact," he said.

Other researchers have theorized that digital media and technology may make driving less desirable and public transportation more convenient. Texting while driving is dangerous and illegal in most states, but there's no risk to texting or working on a laptop while riding a bus or train. Some transit systems have been seeing significant increases in riders.

Another reason for the growing disinterest among young men in driving may be the erosion of the "car-fetish society," travel behavior analyst Nancy McGuckin said. "Today's young adults grew up in the back seat of cars stalled in congestion, hearing their folks swear at the endless traffic. Nothing romantic about that!"

It is also "no longer cool, or even possible, to work on your own vehicle. The engines are so complex most people don't even change their own oil," she said. "Independence, freedom, being able to customize the car to reflect you ? these are not part of young people's association with vehicles."

There also may be economic reasons for the shift, McGuckin's research indicates. Employment of 16- to 24-year-olds as a share of all workers has declined. At the same time, the rate of young men ages 18 to 34 years old living at home has been going up and is greater than the rate of young women living at home.

It may be that unemployment and underemployment have made auto insurance unaffordable for young men, said Alan Pisarski, author of the Transportation Research Board's comprehensive "Commuting in America" reports on U.S. travel trends. "Insurance for males under 25 is just colossally expensive," he said.

There has also been a sharp decline in vehicle trips and the number of miles traveled by vehicle for 16- to 29-year old males, according to McGuckin's analysis of massive government travel surveys between 1990 and 2009. The declines for women were not as great.

"The car companies are very worried," she said.

Gloria Berquist, vice president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, said the alliance is aware that the share of teens and young adults obtaining driver licenses is dropping, although the association hasn't seen the research on the gender differences.

"Some research has shown that young adults today connect with their friends through their smartphones, but at some point younger consumers still need to get from here to there, and a car is still a priority where public transportation is unavailable or limited," she said. "This is especially true for younger adults when they enter the workforce."

New York City, Long Island will ration gas (+video)

To cut waits and hoarding, New York City's?Mayor Michael Bloomberg?and New Jersey's Governor have announced rationing plans. Only one quarter of New York City's gas stations are open, according to Bloomberg. He calls the rationing plan 'practical and enforceable.' ?

Police will be at?gas?stations Friday morning to enforce the new system in New York City and on Long Island.Gas?will be available to drivers with license-plate numbers ending in an odd number or a letter on Friday. On Saturday, drivers with license plates that end in even numbers or zero can fuel up.

"It'll be bad. How am I going to get my jobs done?" said Parris Hancock, a driver for a Manhattan catering company who makes deliveries from morning to night. "I'll have to get up at 4 a.m. and just keep going back for?gas?and waiting in long lines."

Officials said something had to be done to ease the long waits for fuel, which they say has caused panic-buying and hoarding.

"This is designed to let everybody have a fair chance, so the lines aren't too oppressive and that we can get through this," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Bloomberg said the system worked well in New Jersey, where lines went from a two-hour wait to 45 minutes after Gov. Chris Christie announced a similar?rationing?plan.

"We have to do something," Bloomberg said. "This is practical and enforceable and a lot better than doing nothing."

Bloomberg said only a quarter of the city's?gas?stations were open. Some were closed because they were out of power, others because they can't get fuel from terminals and storage tanks that can't unload their cargoes. One station owner in Queens' Bayside section said the last time he had?gas?was three days ago.

"Whatever they can do to improve the situation, I'm in favor of," said yellow-cab driver Clee Walsh, as he drove into a BP station on West 36th Street only to discover that it had no?gas.

The?rationing?plan takes effect at 5 a.m. Friday on Long Island, where hundreds of thousands of customers remain without power; and at 6 a.m. in New York City.

Buses, taxes and limousines, commercial vehicles and emergency vehicles are exempt from the plan, as are people carrying portable?gas?cans. Vanity plates that don't have numbers are considered odd-numbered plates. Out-of-state drivers are also subject to the system.

The mayor said the shortages could last another couple of weeks, worrying owners like Ash Gaied.

"It's more pressure on us," Gaied said. "They yell. They curse. You wouldn't believe it."

Gaied said one?gas?delivery lasts the station about seven hours, then he has to wait up to a full day for another one. He was answering a steady stream of phone calls at dusk Thursday from people running on empty.

"Yes, sir, we have?gas," he told one caller. "No, I don't know how long the wait is."

Officials said the?rationing?would be across the region, including Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island, to avoid a rush across municipal lines for?gas.

"It's important that we stay coordinated because we don't want one county's plan impacting on another county," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. "I'm not going to allow any one of them to do something that compromises a neighborhood because we're all neighbors."

New power outages on Long Island caused by this week's nor'easter again left stations with gasoline in their tanks unable to activate pumps. Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone said the?rationing?"will ease the challenges residents of the bi-county region are experiencing" after the storm.

Cuomo said he understands the panic, seen in lines blocks long for?gas?across New York City.

"The system is coming together slowly," he said.

Gormley reported from Albany. Associated Press writers Jennifer Peltz and Verena Dobnik contributed to this report from New York.?

Mobile App Marketing Platform Trademob Raises $15M Series B Led By Kennet Partners

185509v4-max-250x250Global expansion doesn't come cheap, and to that end, mobile app marketing platform, Trademob, has raised a Series B of $15 million led by Kennet Partners. Specifically, Kennet has invested $12.5 million into the Berlin-based startup, with additional funds coming via what is effectively a follow on round from existing investors, Tengelmann Ventures, and High-Tech Gr?nderfonds. The company isn't being transparent about its previous funding -- as many European startups are wont to do -- but says that it's "under $1 million", which makes this look more like an A round, but whatever.

89% Robot & Frank

All Critics (80) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (71) | Rotten (9)

"Robot & Frank" hits all the right notes - romantic, fantastic, tragic and sweet.

There's a warm and poignant interplay between the co-stars.

Langella ... is tremendous.

It may not seem like an even playing field pitting an actor as powerfully intense as Frank Langella opposite a robot, but that's the game plan behind the waywardly endearing, slightly futuristic fantasy Robot & Frank.

Much of Robot & Frank is (frankly) resistible, including the climactic narrative twist, but there is also a likeable oddness that transcends the sentimental contrivance.

An endearing movie about a human and his mechanical new buddy.

Deserves credit for bringing comic fantasy close to sensitive reality

If Miranda July tackled an episode of Tales of the Unexpected the results might be something close to what's on offer here.

Langella provides a formidable central presence, both stubborn and endearing, while Sarsgaard injects warmth and humanity into Robot.

An hysterically funny, breathlessly paced and moving meditation on old age and existence, topped by an award-worthy turn from Frank Langella. One of the year's best.

Jake Schreier and scriptwriter Christopher Ford go well beyond the initial fun of the robot conceit to craft a thoughtful film musing on both the ageing process and our relationship with technology.

A little gem of a movie about aging and obsolescence that is also a very modest sci-fi cautionary tale.

... a marvel of the highest order. Robot and Frank manages to seamlessly blend comedy, science fiction and drama into a film that is hilarious, truly original and utterly heartfelt

This blend of sentiment and genre fancy is not unlike something Ray Bradbury might have contrived for The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction.

Robot & Frank is an airy, engaging flight of fancy. It's also part caper film, part character study, and part allegory about aging. Robot & Frank shouldn't work, but it does.

..never hits the easy and obvious beats of a buddy comedy; there's no sentimental bonding between man and mecha man. Similarly, though it feints toward romance, the relationship ... resolves in an unexpectedly bittersweet way.

"Robot & Frank" is a study of a man who lives with his past mistakes but can't shake how truly alive they made him feel when he was making them, regardless of what they cost him.

Hodgepodge of moods built around an unlikely story of friendship between a man and his service robot, the film carries itself confidently, with occasional moments of significant emotion.

They get the robot right, with fluid movement (by dancer Rachael Ma) and canned warmth in its user-friendly voice (performed by Peter Sarsgaard).

What a weird, winning little movie is Robot & Frank.

The chief spectacle here -- and it's a good one -- is Langella in gruff, curdled mode, an underappreciated master actor slipping seamlessly into a bespoke role.

"Robot & Frank" is so endearing it's easy to forget it's science fiction.

The movie is sweet and agreeably unambitious, derailed only by an egregious third-act twist.

Import of proteins into chloroplasts is differentially regulated by age

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

New research has found that the transport of proteins into chloroplasts in plants is differentially regulated by the age of the chloroplast; upturning the previously accepted notion that this process is age-independent or only globally up- or down- regulated for all proteins. The research, led by Dr. Hsou-min Li, a Research Fellow from the Institute of Molecular Biology, Academia Sinica of Taiwan, is published October 30 in the open access journal PLOS Biology.

It's long been known that gene expression changes with age, for example, some genes are expressed in young organisms, others in aged organisms. However, up until now, it has been generally believed that the protein-transport processes that take place inside a cell occur independently of the cell's age.

Dr. Li and colleagues investigated pea leaves of different ages and discovered that proteins imported into chloroplasts?the organelles in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs?can be divided into three groups: one group prefers to be imported into very young chloroplasts, the second group has no special preference, and the third group prefer to be imported into older chloroplasts.

"Age-dependent regulation at the protein transport level had not been thoroughly investigated due to technical difficulties," Dr Li explained. "Pea seedlings offer an excellent model for such studies because each plant has leaves of different ages on a single stem and they are cheap to grow. Other scientists have taken advantage of this but at that time, they only had a very limited number of proteins to test. Now with data from genomic and proteomic analyses, we can test a lot more proteins and can show not only that the regulation exists, but also that every protein can be regulated differently."

After finding this novel regulation, Dr Li's group then attempted to find the signal that controls age selectivity. They found that, for each protein, the age-selective signal is located within the signal peptide that controls organelle import. They also identified a signal-peptide motif that is necessary for targeting proteins to older chloroplasts.

"We knew that signal peptides specify the organelle a protein is supposed to be targeted to, acting like address labels," said Dr Li. "When we found that they also contain the information for the age selectivity we observed, we decided to try to identify the "code" that instructs a protein to go to older chloroplasts first. The existence of such a code means that chloroplast signal peptides are not just address labels - they also contain information about "when" a protein should be delivered."

These findings may have implications for selectively targeting proteins into organelles of aging tissues, said Dr Li. "We believe similar kinds of regulation mechanisms may also exist for other organelles in other organisms, like humans. For example, there may be signal peptide motifs that will allow us to specifically target therapeutic proteins into mitochondria in aging cardiac tissues."

Kenyan official: 2,700 Ugandans dead in Somalia

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? The number of African Union troops killed while battling Somali militants has always been a tightly held secret, but a top Kenyan official says more than 2,700 troops have died there.

Richard Onyonka , Kenya's deputy minister of foreign affairs, said Wednesday at a forum on Somalia that Uganda has lost more than 2,700 troops since 2007. Onyonko said about three dozen Kenyan forces have died there over the last year.

Neither the African Union nor Uganda has ever confirmed its casualty figures, and several officials who work on Somalia said Onyonko's figure sounded high. Two officials told The Associated Press last month that about 500 Ugandan and Burundian troops have died in Somalia since 2007. A Ugandan spokesman did not answer calls for comment.
